WHY I DON’T LISTEN TO SECULAR MUSIC 🎶
disclaimer ‼️ - In my day to day life, I do not listen to secular music. Every once in a while, I’ll listen to love songs (especially since celebrating my engagement and planning a wedding). There are also times where I am in an environment that I am not in control of the music, so I do hear secular music BUT when I am able to control my music, I am listening to Christian Rap, Christian RnB, & worship music.
1. Guarding Your Heart and Mind
• Secular music often contains messages that may not align with Christian values, promoting themes like materialism, lust, or rebellion.
Proverbs 4:23: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
2. Focus on What is Pure and Praiseworthy
• The Bible encourages believers to focus on things that are pure, noble, and praiseworthy
Philippians 4:8: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things."
3. Avoiding Conformity to the World
• Christians are called to be different from the world, living in a way that reflects Christ's character. Secular music can encourage conformity to worldly values.
Romans 12:2: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
4. What You Consume Shapes You
• What we listen to, watch, and consume shapes our thoughts, behaviors, and spiritual health. Secular music can plant seeds that hinder spiritual growth.
Matthew 6:22-23: "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness."
With this specifically, especially when I would be driving, secular music would make me so angry, or it would encourage me to just get offended by anything anyone did to me.
5. Building Up Your Spirit
• Worship and Christian music are designed to edify, build faith, and help you draw closer to God. Secular music often lacks this purpose.
Ephesians 5:19: "Speak to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord."
By being intentional about what we consume, including the music we listen to, we allow our lives to reflect our faith and relationship with God.
