... Read moreDuring my recent exploration of Inca heritage sites, I was fascinated to learn about the existence of what can be described as ancient 'hotels' used by the Incas. Located in the province of Huacaibamba, specifically in the high-altitude region of Huánuco at over 3,900 meters, these places such as Manchac served as strategic centers where the Incas controlled large territories. These "callancas" were the largest in Peru and functioned primarily as lodging for soldiers, Chasquis (messenger runners), and travelers on long expeditions. This system highlights the Incas’ advanced infrastructure and their ability to manage a vast empire through well-organized rest points that supported communication and military efficiency. What intrigued me the most was the presence of the "nushnu" in these centers, a special platform or space where important rituals were conducted and critical decisions were made. This aspect of spiritual and governance significance shows how Inca society seamlessly integrated administration with religious practice. Despite the historical importance, such sites are often underappreciated today. Visiting the remains of these lodging centers gave me a deeper understanding of how the Incas established interconnected networks across challenging mountainous landscapes. If you are interested in history and culture, visiting Huacaibamba offers a unique glimpse into how ancient civilizations managed travel, communication, and governance in ways that continue to impress modern researchers and travelers alike.
