... Read moreIt feels like just yesterday, but also a lifetime ago, that I made the decision to fundamentally change my life. Today, February 13, 2024, marks a significant milestone for me: 19 months sober after surviving liver failure. Looking back, it’s a testament to resilience and the incredible capacity of our bodies to heal when given the chance. Many people wonder what truly happens to your body, especially your liver, when you stop drinking alcohol. Even just 6 weeks no alcohol can kickstart a remarkable process of recovery. For me, the journey was long, but I noticed significant improvements even in those early stages. The liver is an amazing organ, capable of remarkable regeneration. In those first weeks and months, the inflammation starts to decrease, fatty deposits begin to clear, and your body begins the arduous task of repairing damaged cells. I remember feeling a profound shift in my energy levels and a gradual decrease in the persistent fatigue and brain fog that had become my 'normal.' It's a powerful reminder that it's never too late to give your liver a break. Before my diagnosis, I experienced a range of symptoms of liver cirrhosis that, looking back, were clear warning signs of severe liver damage. These included extreme fatigue that no amount of rest could cure, unexplained weight loss, persistent nausea, and a yellowish tint to my skin and eyes (jaundice). I also suffered from dark urine, swollen ankles, and abdominal bloating due to fluid retention. I often dismissed these symptoms, attributing them to stress or other minor ailments, which was a dangerous mistake. It’s crucial to recognize these warning signs and seek medical help promptly. Don't wait until it's too late, like I almost did. Liver failure is a terrifying experience, and frankly, it's not just one organ failing; it has a devastating domino effect on your entire body. The liver plays a vital role in detoxification, protein synthesis, and metabolism. When it fails, the consequences are severe – leading to widespread organ dysfunction, and in the most dire cases, can unfortunately lead to death. This experience truly highlighted for me how interconnected our bodily systems are, and how neglecting one aspect of health, like excessive alcohol consumption, can lead to such devastating outcomes. It's a stark reminder of the importance of holistic health and avoiding behaviours that can cause such severe organ damage. My journey to 19 months sober wasn't easy, and it certainly isn't over. It’s about building a new life, finding healthy coping mechanisms, and truly prioritizing your well-being. If you're struggling with alcohol or worried about your liver health, please know there's hope and support available. Small steps, like aiming for even 6 weeks without alcohol, can make a significant difference. It's about giving your body the fighting chance it deserves to heal and thrive again. This sobriety journey is a marathon, not a sprint, but I'm grateful for every single step towards a healthier, sober me. The reward of healing and feeling truly alive again is immeasurable.
