tips for learning to code 🩷

As promised, here is part 2 for coding tips. Most of what I learned coding was self taught, so it is definitely possible to do, just take a bot to get in the swing of things!!

Making an outline is a must. Especially for longer projects, or anything that builds. This is the best way to keep things organized and come up with a good plan!

Stack overflow is a top tear! There are sooo many questions and answers on here. You can always post your questions too, but I recommend checking around first because most likely the question is answered somewhere.

This is mostly for python, but using a Jupter notebook is so useful!! It helps to visualize things, separate things, and keep track of everything. I actually learned python on Jupyter notebook, and it was such an incredible tool.

... Read moreWhen I first started my self-taught coding journey, I quickly realized that my environment played a huge role in my productivity and motivation. It's not just about having a powerful laptop displaying code; it's about creating a space where you want to learn. For me, that meant a clean desk, good lighting, and yes, often a warm coffee drink by my side. Having a dedicated spot, even if it's just a corner of your room, helps signal to your brain that it's time to focus. I also found that keeping a physical pink notebook handy for jotting down ideas or sketching out a code outline really helped. It's amazing how much a comfortable chair and a distraction-free setup can boost your learning. While the original post mentions self-teaching, I've also dipped my toes into various online coding courses to fill gaps or deepen my understanding. There are so many options out there, from free platforms like freeCodeCamp and Coursera to more intensive bootcamps. My advice? Don't just pick the first one you see. Look for courses that offer hands-on projects and have active communities. I always found that applying what I learned immediately made the concepts stick better. And remember, even with structured courses, your laptop is your best friend—experiment, break things, and rebuild. Sometimes, even just watching tutorials on my laptop screen with a notepad beside me was enough to spark new ideas. Stack Overflow is absolutely a lifeline, as mentioned before. I can't count how many times I've landed on a Stack Overflow website page to solve a tricky bug or understand an error message. But what happens when Stack Overflow doesn't have the exact answer? That's when you need to develop your debugging superpowers! I learned to break down the problem into smaller pieces, use print statements (or console.log or a debugger) to see what my code was actually doing, and systematically rule out possibilities. Sometimes, just stepping away from the laptop screen and coming back with fresh eyes works wonders. Even for specific challenges, like those you might encounter in C++ programming, the fundamental approach to problem-solving remains the same: understand the error, isolate the issue, and then seek resources—whether it's documentation, forums, or even asking a peer. Learning to code can feel overwhelming at times, especially when you're just starting out and trying to 'learn coding' from scratch. There will be moments of frustration, I promise you! What kept me going was setting small, achievable goals and celebrating every tiny victory. Building a simple project, even just a calculator or a "guess the number" game, gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. Don't compare your progress to others; everyone's journey is different. And if you're exploring Python code using Jupyter Notebook, remember to save your progress and go back to review your old code. It's incredibly satisfying to see how far you've come. Consistency beats intensity, so dedicate even 30 minutes a day if you can. It all adds up!
