Tips for asking for a letter of recommendation

I have asked for a lot of letters of recommendation from college aps, internships, scholarships, grad school etc. and here are the tips and WHY I recommend these things!

You should ask far in advance for a couple of reasons, the first is to be respectful of your potential letter writers time. The second is to show you have prepared for what you are applying for with ample time. Additionally, it allows you to have a backup plan.

You should have a draft that you are confident in for all application materials as your letter writers will typically ask for this information. Having this prepared will one help you be on time for deadlines, but two help them make the letter as detailed as possible.

Having some sort of statement giving details to what you are looking for in a letter from a recommender helps them identify what you are looking for out of your letter. It also helps them build a strong and effective letter for you.

Giving details is so important! Pro tip, if this is for college apps, grad school aps, where you are asking them possibly a lot of different letters where they would need to send it multiple different ways or deadlines, make a spreadsheet!

This not only facilitates a more personalized letter but also increases the likelihood that they will agree to write it. Crucially, having a well-prepared draft of your application materials at hand can help your recommenders understand your strengths better and craft a more effective letter. Consider organizing important details, such as due dates and submission processes, in a concise document or spreadsheet. This ensures your recommenders know precisely what is required and when, which can be incredibly helpful if they're submitting letters to multiple institutions. If possible, follow up shortly before the due date to gently remind them and to thank them for their support. Overall, with strategic planning and clear communication, you can maximize the chances of receiving compelling letters of recommendation that enhance your college or job applications.
