How to Ask for a Recommendation the Right Way ✨📩
The first time I asked for a recommendation letter, I was so nervous. I overthought every word and almost didn’t ask at all 😅. But I really needed it for a summer program, so I pushed through.
What helped? Asking early. I gave my professor about three weeks' notice, which I think made a big difference. He wasn’t rushed, and the letter ended up being super thoughtful. Now I always try to give at least that much time, more if it’s something competitive.
When I reached out, I kept it simple and respectful. I explained what the letter was for, why I was asking them specifically, and offered to send my resume and transcript. I also shared a little context about the program and what I hoped to do.
Honestly, making it easy for them is key. Professors write so many letters, so the more info you give, the better they can hype you up. And don’t be scared to ask! Just be polite, clear, and grateful. That one letter helped me get in, and now I always give the same advice to friends 💌🫶
