What I do over summer as a graduate student 📚☀️✈️

The biggest misconception about grad school is that you have your summers free. If anything, I would say you work more over the summer, but instead of classes it’s research so you have more flexible in your schedule and are most likely enjoying the work more!

So naturally, the thing I do the most over the summer is research and really try to achieve my bigger goals while my focus is primarily working on thesis work.

I also like to volunteer over the summer. Personally, I volunteer throughout the year because I think it’s so important to give back and I’m really passionate about women and girls in stem outreach, but I love doing it over the summer while you have more time and you can volunteer for the summer programs.

The other thing that I love about grad school is being able to go to conferences and most of these will happen over the summer and it’s literally such a great experience !!

Lastly, I take the summer to review basics and get organized in terms of concepts and physically with my research. While I’m not taking classes, I think it’s really important to utilize the time to go back and review things to make sure it stays fresh!!

... Read moreDuring the summer break, graduate students often face the misconception that they have ample free time. In reality, summer becomes an opportunity to engage intensively in research and achieve significant academic milestones, especially concerning their thesis work. By immersing themselves in innovative projects, students not only enhance their skills but also deeply enjoy their research pursuits with more flexible schedules. Volunteering is a crucial aspect of summer for many grad students, particularly those involved in STEM outreach programs. Summer allows for deeper engagement with community initiatives, empowering women and girls to enter historically male-dominated fields. This outreach work not only benefits the community but also enriches the graduate students' personal growth and sense of responsibility. Additionally, conferences play a significant role during this season. Many academic gatherings, workshops, and summer schools are scheduled, providing invaluable networking opportunities and insights into the latest developments in various fields. At these events, students can present their research findings, gain feedback from peers and professionals, and collaborate on future projects. Furthermore, summer serves as the perfect time for students to revisit fundamental concepts and organize their research approach. Without the pressure of regular classes, students can dedicate time to study the basics, ensuring their knowledge remains sharp and ready for the upcoming academic year. Reviewing past materials and organizing research data not only solidifies their understanding but also prepares them for effective progress in their studies. Embracing these various activities, grad students make the most of their summer, paving the way for personal and professional success.
