the 5bs of sorority recruitment

different organizations go off of different acronyms and ways to say this, but across recruitment, and all the schools that I know of it’s very similar to the topics that they tell you should probably avoid.

I will say I think this means that if it does come up organically, don’t like freak out, but just kind of possibly move past the conversation. Basically it’s not something that you should bring up or constantly talk about.

But like I mentioned a little bit for the last one at the end of the day you want to be yourself and you want to be in an organization that has similar values to you, but it is good to know topics that are deemed not super appropriate for the environment of Recruitment.

But like I said in my sorority and at my school when it came to beliefs, this was something that a lot of us did talk about because it was important to us as individuals.

... Read moreDuring my sorority recruitment, understanding and respecting the 5 B's truly made a difference in my experience. For instance, avoiding talks about booze or parties helped me focus on the genuine aspects of the organizations rather than any stereotypes. While some worry about fees or financial topics, mentioning concerns about affordability later in recruitment is okay, but openly discussing wealth or money can come off the wrong way. Also, political discussions and sensitive topics like ballots can stir tension since every member comes from diverse backgrounds with varying beliefs. I found that focusing on shared values and being authentic allowed me to connect better without putting anyone in uncomfortable positions. Moreover, although the 5 B’s suggest steering clear of certain topics, it’s important to be yourself. If deeper beliefs come up naturally, that’s okay—as they did in my sorority, where values were important to many members. The key is to avoid forcing these topics repeatedly. Finally, asking thoughtful questions about the sisterhood, philanthropy, and sisterly support can show genuine interest. Remember, recruitment is about finding an organization that aligns with your values, so keeping conversations respectful and positive really helped me make the right decision.
