STEM classes in college vs high school

If you are going into college this year in a stem major or if you have a lot of stem classes needed for gen eds here are the differences to expect.

The thing that threw me off the most is the grade structure, because let’s be honest that is what I cared the most about. I was totally freaked when I saw how much each test counted towards the finial grade percentage as it’s typically WAY more than my high school tests were.

This is because there are less tests, and the focus of the courses are less about “participation”. There is also less homework in the way that there is less assignments but each one will be much longer, and in my cases a lot harder.

So what to do about it? Change your routine. Start your homework a week before it’s due or more not the night before, and same with studying.

For labs it really does depend on the school and course. I personally liked when the lab was completely separate from the class, but having it incorporated into the finial grade was nice too because it meant the exams counted less so it took some of the pressure off.

... Read moreTransitioning from high school to college STEM classes can feel overwhelming, but understanding the nuances can help students navigate this academic leap more effectively. One major shift involves the grading structure. In college, exams tend to have significantly more weight — often accounting for a large percentage of your final grade. Unlike high school where multiple tests and quizzes spread out grading, college courses typically feature fewer but more impactful assessments. This means that each exam requires thorough preparation and understanding beyond merely replicating homework problems. Developing strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills is essential, as test questions often challenge students to apply concepts in new and complex ways. Homework assignments differ too. College STEM courses usually assign fewer tasks than high school, but these assignments are longer, more complex, and require a deeper level of analysis. Starting homework well before the due date allows students to break down challenging problems, consult resources, and refine their work without last-minute stress. This approach also enhances learning retention and builds a solid foundation for exams. Lab work represents another important area of change. Depending on the institution and specific course, labs may be conducted as separate classes or integrated into the main course grade. Separate lab classes usually provide focused practical experience, while when labs are part of the overall course grade, they can help balance the pressure of high-stakes exams. Familiarizing yourself with how your college structures labs early on will help in planning your study schedule and managing performance. Study routines require adjustment as well. Since exams count heavily and participation plays a smaller role in grade calculation, active studying techniques like forming study groups, regularly reviewing course material, and consulting professors during office hours become invaluable. Waiting until the last minute to cram is rarely effective given the complexity and volume of college-level material. Understanding these differences helps build realistic expectations and promotes academic strategies tailored for college STEM courses. Embracing proactive time management and deeper engagement with coursework can ease the transition from high school and pave the way to success in demanding STEM majors.
