Why I DON’T Use Afterpay 🤔

I do NOT use Afterpay. Here are a few reasons why.. 🧐

High Interest & Fees. If you miss payments, Afterpay can charge late fees or interest, which can quickly add up and make the purchase more expensive than initially planned.

I think Afterpay encourages impulse buying. The "buy now, pay later" model can tempt you to make purchases you can't afford, leading to overspending and being in debt.

Negative Impact on Credit Score. Missed or late payments can be reported to credit agencies, damaging your credit score and affecting future borrowing ability.

... Read moreI’ve seen a lot of buzz around 'buy now, pay later' services like Afterpay, and while they might seem like a convenient option, I truly believe it’s important to look beyond the surface. Many people ask, 'Is Afterpay safe?' or 'Is Afterpay bad?' From my perspective, while it’s not inherently unsafe in terms of personal data, it definitely carries significant financial risks that aren't always obvious upfront. One of my biggest concerns, and something that often comes up when friends ask me about these services, is how easily they can encourage impulse buying. It's so tempting to see an item and think, 'I can afford this in four easy payments!' but that immediate gratification can mask whether you can truly afford the total cost. This can quickly lead to overspending on things you don't necessarily need, piling up small debts that become a big headache. I’ve heard stories of people getting caught in a cycle, where each new purchase feels manageable until suddenly they have multiple payment plans running simultaneously, making it feel impossible to keep track. Then there's the critical question of 'What happens if you don't pay Afterpay?' or 'What happens if I miss an Afterpay payment?' This is where the service can get really tricky. While Afterpay often boasts 'no interest,' this only applies if you make all your payments on time. If you miss a payment, that's when you can be hit with significant Afterpay late fees. These fees can add up quickly, making that 'affordable' purchase much more expensive than you ever intended. It’s not just a small penalty; these high interest & fees can turn a minor slip-up into a major financial drain. And it’s not just about the money; the stress of constantly worrying about upcoming payments and avoiding late fees can be really draining. Beyond the immediate fees, there’s the negative impact on credit score. While Afterpay might not always report to major credit bureaus for on-time payments, missed or late payments absolutely can be reported. This means that a few missed installments could damage your credit score, affecting your ability to get a loan for a car, a mortgage, or even a credit card down the line. It's a silent killer for your financial future. What I've learned is that it’s always better to build good credit habits rather than risk damaging them for temporary convenience. So, what can you do instead? My advice is to always prioritize saving up for purchases, especially non-essentials. If you absolutely need something and don't have the cash, consider a well-managed credit card with a low interest rate that you pay off in full each month, which can actually help build your credit positively. Or, even better, create a realistic budget and stick to it. Understanding your finances and avoiding the trap of easy payments can save you a lot of stress and money in the long run. It’s about building long-term financial health, not just satisfying an immediate want.
