Special Phlebotomy Tubes and their Uses🧪

Hey girls! I made a post for common phlebotomy tubes so of course I had to make one for specialty tubes!

1. Yellow Tubes- So your yellow tubes are going to be used in sterile venipuncture for blood cultures. There are 2 types SPS and ACD.

2. Royal Blue Tubes- available with different additives and contain very low levels of trace elements such as zinc, lead, mercury, and other metals.

3. Tan Tubes- contain EDTA and also have very low levels of lead in them

4. Orange Tubes- have thrombin which is a powerful clotting factor

5. White Tubes- specialized plasma preparation tubes and are required by laboratories performing molecular diagnostic tests

6. Red/Green Tubes- cell preparation tubes, remember these are for HEPARINIZED whole blood

7. Light Blue/Black Tubes- cell preparation tubes, remember these are for CITRATED whole blood

8. Black Tubes- these are used for ESR testing

I hope this helps you pass and memorize your tubes! The order of draw is the most important to remember, however having some knowledge of your specialty tubes will help you along the way. Good luck!!

... Read moreHey everyone! Building on my previous post about common phlebotomy tubes, let's dive even deeper into some of the special ones that often pop up in exams or real-world scenarios. Mastering these can truly make a difference in your understanding and confidence as a phlebotomist or student! One type that gets a lot of questions is the Serum Separator Tube (SST), often recognizable by its Tiger Top (a marbled red and yellow/gold stopper). While not explicitly listed in the original post, these are incredibly common and vital for many tests. Tiger Top tubes contain a clot activator and a gel separator. After centrifugation, the gel forms a barrier between the clotted blood cells and the serum, allowing for easy separation and transport of serum for various chemistry, immunology, and serology tests. Think of it as a super-efficient way to get pure serum without manual separation, which is crucial for accurate lab results. Knowing about these will definitely give you an edge! Let’s also expand a bit on the Yellow Tubes mentioned earlier. You heard about SPS and ACD, but what's the key difference and why does it matter? SPS (Sodium Polyanethol Sulfonate) is primarily used for blood cultures. Its main job is to inhibit phagocytosis and complement, preventing bacterial killing, while also inhibiting some antibiotics, allowing microorganisms to grow for identification. On the other hand, ACD (Acid Citrate Dextrose) is often used for specialized tests like paternity testing, tissue typing, and DNA studies. The citrate acts as an anticoagulant, and dextrose helps preserve red blood cells. Understanding these nuances is super important for selecting the correct tube for the right test. Another common scenario you might encounter, perhaps even on a certification exam, involves collecting specific specimens. For instance, if a patient care technician is preparing to collect and transport a bilirubin blood specimen, which color tube should they use? Bilirubin samples are usually collected in a red-top, gold-top (SST), or green-top (heparin) tube. A critical point for bilirubin is that it's photosensitive, meaning it breaks down when exposed to light. So, once collected, the specimen should be immediately protected from light, often by wrapping the tube in foil or placing it in an amber-colored bag. This small detail can significantly impact the accuracy of the test results and is a prime example of why knowing your tubes and specimen handling is key. While knowing the specific additives and uses for each special tube is great, always remember the Order of Draw. It’s not just a memorization task; it's a critical safety and quality measure. Sticking to the correct order prevents additive carryover between tubes, which can contaminate specimens and lead to inaccurate results. For example, if EDTA from a lavender tube gets into a tube meant for potassium testing, it can falsely elevate potassium levels. Always double-check your facility's protocol, but the general order ensures the integrity of all your samples. Keep practicing, and you'll nail it!
