Middle school lesson in test anxiety 2
📚✨ Building a Test Anxiety Toolbox ✨📚
Test anxiety can make it difficult for students to demonstrate what they know. This week, we focused on three practical strategies that students can use before and during a test:
🫁 Box Breathing – A simple breathing technique that helps calm the nervous system, improve focus, and reduce feelings of stress.
💭 Positive Self-Talk – Learning to challenge anxious thoughts and replace them with encouraging ones such as, “I am prepared,” “I can handle this,” and “I will do my best.”
📖 Smarter Studying – Spacing out study sessions, practicing retrieval, and reviewing material over time instead of cramming the night before.
The goal isn’t to eliminate all nervousness—it’s to give students tools that help them manage anxiety, build confidence, and perform at their best.

Having personally assisted many middle school students in navigating the challenges of test anxiety, I can attest to the effectiveness of using a well-rounded approach like the one outlined here. Box breathing is particularly powerful because it engages the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to lower the heart rate and calm racing thoughts. I often guide students to practice this technique several times before a test, which creates a habitual calming effect. Positive self-talk is another game-changer. From experience, students who replace negative thoughts with affirmations like “I am prepared” or “I can handle this” not only reduce anxiety but also increase their motivation to focus and recall information. Encouraging students to write down or repeat these phrases helps reinforce a growth mindset, building resilience. Smarter studying cannot be overstated—spacing study sessions and practicing retrieval helps transfer information into long-term memory, which reduces last-minute stress and improves performance. I’ve observed that students who avoid cramming feel more confident and less overwhelmed during exams. Integrating these strategies creates a supportive toolbox to manage test anxiety effectively. Moreover, these skills extend beyond academics, fostering overall emotional regulation that benefits students in daily life and future challenges.
