Can you tolerate people who disrespect others?

I once dated a guy who lived in his parents’ basement. One night, he invited me over after his mom made spaghetti. He offered me a plate, but I declined. I’ve been vegetarian since I was 9, and I knew his mom usually puts meat in the sauce. “Oh, she knew you were coming!” he said. “She set aside sauce without meat just for you.” It seemed sweet, so I accepted, even though I wasn’t hungry. He fixed my plate and came back downstairs, then suddenly shoved a forkful into my mouth. I thought he was just being goofy until I started chewing. He stared: “Is it good? Is it good?” As I nodded, I glanced at my plate and saw chunks of meat in the sauce. I’d already swallowed most of what he’d fed me. The second he saw I’d noticed, he erupted into laugh like tricking me was the funniest joke ever. I was horrified, this wasn’t a prank, it was disrespectful. He knew how important my choice was. What was your dating red flag?

... Read moreThat story about the spaghetti with meat really hit home. It's truly shocking how some people can just disregard your choices and boundaries, all for a 'joke.' I've had my share of moments where I've had to decide if I could truly tolerate disrespect, and let me tell you, it's never worth it in the long run. Disrespect isn't always as blatant as being tricked into eating something you don't want, like that incident with the spaghetti, tomato sauce, mussels, and bacon pieces. Sometimes it's subtle, a gradual chipping away at your self-worth. It could be someone constantly interrupting you, making light of your feelings, or ignoring your requests. I once dated someone who would always 'forget' my dietary preferences, even after I'd explicitly told them multiple times. It wasn't about the food itself; it was about the lack of respect for my words and my boundaries. That's a huge red flag right there. When someone disrespects your boundaries, whether it's about your diet, your time, or your personal space, it shows a fundamental lack of regard for you as a person. It’s easy to rationalize these behaviors, especially when you care about someone. We might think, 'Oh, they didn't mean it,' or 'Maybe I'm overreacting.' But learning to identify and address relationship disrespect early is crucial. The queries 'not putting up with disrespect' and 'never allow disrespect' resonate so much with what I've learned over the years. You deserve to be in relationships where you feel valued and respected, not constantly questioning if you're being taken seriously. One of the hardest lessons is realizing that you might need to distance yourself from people who disrespect you. This doesn't always mean ending a relationship entirely, but it often means reassessing its nature. If someone consistently shows a lack of respect, actively choosing to reduce your interaction or set firm new boundaries becomes essential. I remember a friend who kept making fun of my career choice, despite knowing how passionate I was about it. Initially, I just laughed it off, but eventually, I had to tell her directly that her comments were disrespectful and if they continued, I'd need to limit our time together. It was tough, but it taught me the importance of standing firm. What does 'never tolerate disrespect from anyone' truly mean? For me, it means having a clear understanding of my own worth and what I'm willing to accept. It's about recognizing that you don't need to accept disrespect from anyone, whether it's a partner, a friend, or even a family member. It's about protecting your peace and emotional well-being. Sometimes, the body language of a man can even give away these subtle signs of disrespect or disinterest before words are even spoken – like constantly checking their phone while you're talking, or turning their body away. These little cues often signal that they're not fully present or engaged. It’s often said, 'Never allow someone to disrespect your partner,' but equally important is 'never allow someone to disrespect *you*.' Your voice matters, your preferences matter, and your feelings matter. If you find yourself constantly making excuses for someone's behavior, it might be time to reflect on whether that person truly pours into you as much as you pour into them. Embracing the idea of 'never accept disrespect' is a powerful step towards healthier relationships and a stronger sense of self-worth. Remember, setting boundaries isn't about pushing people away; it's about teaching them how to treat you. It's about honoring yourself first.

Not fucking funny at all. I feel like this is a joke people made literally 20 years ago when veganism started gaining popularity?? Like ha ha you’re vegan and the latte isn’t soymilk, but I legitimately have not encountered people who thinks this shit is funny in decades. The fact that most people do not eat meat for ethical reasons and because it literally disgusts them makes this unforgivable. For some people sneaking meat in a dish is like that scene in the help where she serves her the pie 😭 i’m not vegetarian, but I do have food aversions, and if somebody thought it was funny to tell me that there was cheese or mayonnaise in a dish halfway through I would, and I am not joking, throw the dish at them. I would throw it at them.
