May is preeclampsia awareness month

5/7 Edited to

... Read moreExperiencing preeclampsia firsthand can be a terrifying and life-changing journey. From my own experience and from the stories shared by others, it's clear that early recognition and persistent self-advocacy are critical in managing this condition. Preeclampsia often begins with high blood pressure and signs like severe headaches, vision changes, swelling, and upper abdominal pain. However, as I learned, these symptoms can sometimes be subtle or dismissed by healthcare providers if blood pressure readings seem normal or if other signs are not apparent at first. In fact, I noticed my blood pressure fluctuated with anxiety and even conversation, something that confused my medical team initially. This underscores how personal attention and listening to a patient’s concerns can make a profound difference. My baby was diagnosed with a tongue and lip tie shortly after birth, which seemed like a minor imperfection to others, but that imperfection was part of the story that ultimately saved my life. It reminded me that no detail is too small when your health and the health of your baby are at stake. Navigating the postpartum period with preeclampsia can also bring challenges such as difficult breastfeeding experiences and emotional distress. Support networks, both medical and personal, are invaluable to help cope with the physical pain and the emotional journey. Education on preeclampsia—for pregnant individuals, families, and even healthcare professionals—needs to be widespread to reduce risks and improve outcomes. Sharing stories and raising awareness during May can empower women to trust their instincts and advocate for themselves effectively. If you suspect preeclampsia or postpartum preeclampsia, persist in seeking evaluation even if initial tests seem normal. Your vigilance and knowledge could truly be lifesaving. Remember, awareness is not just about information—it's about action that can save lives.

Mental health is just as important as physical health—and it deserves the same care, attention, and compassion. For so many, healing isn’t linear. It’s layered, quiet, and often unseen. Some days look like progress. Other days look like survival. Both matter. This month is a reminder that: ✨
