“Where do I feel my most difficult feelings?”

Welcome to a new series I’m doing! I think storytelling and vulnerability can be so healing, so I think by sharing some of my own work, it can help both me, but also others by inspiring them to do their own shadow work. During this series, I’ll share my prompt and a snippet of my journal entry.

“When my anxiety, sadness, or frustration rise, I feel it in my throat. A tightening that makes it hard to talk and breathe. My mouth goes dry. From there the tightness spreads to my jar, my chest, my shoulders. It feels like my voice, my thoughts and expression are frozen, locked in stone.”

It allows individuals to document their repressed or unconscious thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, facilitating a deeper understanding of emotional struggles. When engaging in shadow work, it’s vital to create a safe space for reflection. Begin by identifying your triggers. This can be anxiety, frustration, or feelings of sadness that manifest physically. Recognizing where you feel these emotions can lead to insightful discoveries. Understanding the mind-body connection is crucial; often, emotions are felt in specific areas like the throat, chest, or shoulders, as described in personal anecdotes. By noting physical sensations associated with emotions, you create a language to express and release them. Use your shadow journal to explore these feelings, unpack their origins, and challenge the narratives that hold you back. Additionally, self-care practices like mindfulness and deep breathing can help alleviate the intensity of difficult emotions. Meditative techniques allow for a pause, giving space to confront feelings instead of suppressing them. Pairing these practices with your journaling can enhance the healing process. Engaging in discussions or finding communities focused on healing through reflection can also be beneficial. Sharing experiences fosters connection and reduces feelings of isolation. Remember, your journey through shadow work is deeply personal, yet it can unify and inspire others. Embrace the process of understanding your emotional landscape, and allow your shadow work to guide you towards healing and self-acceptance.
