Life was so simple before social media

2024/10/12 Edited to

... Read moreLately, I've just been feeling it so much – this overwhelming sense that social media needs to crash for a while, just so we can all snap back to reality. It's not an extreme thought, I promise! It's more like a deep yearning for a simpler time, a time when life was so much better before the internet, and definitely before social media took over every aspect of our lives. I remember a time when everyone was natural, and honestly, there were no filters – not on our faces, and not on our interactions. Conversations felt more genuine, and connections deeper, because we weren't constantly comparing ourselves to perfectly curated feeds. Now, it feels like everything is so digital, and sometimes I wonder if people don't connect the way we used to anymore. We're constantly glued to screens, scrolling through highlights, but are we truly present in our own lives? The sheer amount of information and curated perfection creates an unspoken pressure, a subtle competition that leaves us feeling inadequate rather than inspired. My mind often wanders back to those good old days. Oh, I miss the days when we used to play outside! We'd ride our bikes until the streetlights came on, play jump rope with intricate rhymes, and gather friends for a game of tag until we were breathless. There was this innocent mischievous joy in making prank calls (before caller ID ruined it!) or the thrill of ringing someone's doorbell and running away. Even passing love notes in class and playing footsies under the table felt like monumental acts of connection. These were the moments that truly defined my childhood, making me feel connected to my community and the world around me, not just to a pixelated version of it. It’s not just the activities; it's the *feeling*. Back then, everything was so simple. There was less pressure, less comparison, fewer distractions. We were present. We were living in the moment, not documenting it for an invisible audience. This constant pressure for competition – who has more followers, who has the best vacation photos, whose life looks the most perfect – it's exhausting. It makes you yearn for a time when self-worth wasn't measured in likes. So, what if we actually let social media take a break? Even if it's just for a day, a week, or a month? I think we'd all learn to crash back to reality in the best way possible. We'd rediscover hobbies, reconnect with loved ones face-to-face, read more books, spend more time in nature. We'd find that natural glow that comes from living authentically, not from a filter. It might feel scary at first to disconnect, but imagine the freedom! We could truly focus on what brings us joy and genuine fulfillment. Maybe then we'd remember that life was so simple back then because we made it that way, by prioritizing real experiences over digital ones. What do you think? Are you ready for a digital detox to bring back some of that old-school simplicity?
