Okay… first of all—WHY did no one warn me how wild this ride was about to be?! This was my first Brandon Massey book and baby, it will not be my last. I feel like I need to walk around and check all the locks on my doors. Twice.
From page one, this book had me in a chokehold. I’m talking about “let me just read one more chapter” turned into me reading the entire book like I didn’t have responsibilities, a bedtime, or basic self-respect. The twists?? The audacity of the plot??! Sir, how dare you.
There were moments I was clutching my imaginary pearls, yelling at the characters like I was watching a horror movie:
“Girl don’t go in there!”
“WHY would you give him your key??”
“Oh no… he’s too friendly. He’s either a killer or a pyramid scheme recruiter.”
Every chapter had me looking around like… wait, could this actually happen in real life?? Because if so, I’m about to start asking my landlord for references.
Brandon Massey does suspense right. He mixes everyday situations with just enough psychological creep factor that you start second-guessing everybody in your life. Your neighbor? Shady. Your landlord? Secretly running a criminal empire. Your mailman? In on it too.
If you’re into thrillers that are fast-paced, packed with twists, and just the right amount of “what the actual hell is going on,” The Landlord is a must-read. Highly recommend—just don’t read it alone at night. Or maybe do… if you like stress and being paranoid.
... Read moreAfter finishing 'The Landlord' and being completely blown away, I couldn't help but dive deeper into Brandon Massey's body of work. For me, discovering a new author who consistently delivers that heart-pounding suspense is like finding a hidden gem. What truly stands out about Massey, and especially what made 'The Landlord' such a gripping read, is his incredible knack for taking everyday situations and infusing them with a creeping, psychological horror that feels terrifyingly real.
He doesn't rely on cheap scares; instead, he masterfully builds tension, making you question the motives of seemingly ordinary people. It's this blend of domestic suspense and a touch of the macabre that makes his thrillers so unique and unforgettable. I've found that he excels at crafting characters you can relate to, only to then plunge them into nightmarish scenarios, making you feel every ounce of their fear and paranoia. It's like he's holding a mirror up to our own deepest anxieties about safety and trust.
If you're new to Brandon Massey, like I was before picking up 'The Landlord,' you're in for a treat. Beyond this incredible read, I’ve heard amazing things about his other works such as 'Dark Corner,' which explores a haunted house with a relentless evil, and 'Don't Ever Tell,' another domestic thriller that promises to keep you guessing. What I appreciate most is his consistency; he seems to have a formula for suspense that just *works*, time and time again.
His writing style is so fluid and engaging that chapters just fly by, making it impossible to put his books down. You know you're reading a Brandon Massey novel when you start looking over your shoulder, double-checking the locks, and wondering if your seemingly innocent neighbor is secretly harboring a dark secret. He creates an immersive experience that lives with you long after you've turned the last page. So, if 'The Landlord' hooked you, or if you're just looking for an author who truly understands how to deliver a chilling, fast-paced thriller, then Brandon Massey should definitely be your next literary obsession. You won't regret it – just make sure you read with the lights on!
I love Brandon Massey’s book. “The Exes” is so good and crazy!
