The Year I Almost Quit as a Funeral Director 🫣

My journey into the funeral industry wasn’t glamorous — far from it. 🫣

I traded parties for midnight calls, holidays for wakes, and dates for the silence of grief rooms.

Working in a male-dominated trade meant I had to prove myself, over and over again.

I lost friends, love, and sleep… but I gained something deeper — purpose.

If you’ve ever wondered whether chasing your calling is worth the sacrifice, maybe my story will help you find your answer. 💭

... Read moreEntering the funeral industry was one of the most difficult transitions I’ve ever faced. The very first year tested me in ways I never imagined—from being woken up in the middle of the night repeatedly, to rushing to the place of death within an hour, to helping grieving families navigate the hardest moments of their lives. Unlike my friends who were out partying or relaxing on holidays, my schedule was unpredictable and often stretched beyond 24 hours, especially when multiple funerals overlapped. Being a woman in a male-dominated field added another layer of challenge. I had to prove constantly that I was dedicated and capable, willing to get my hands dirty and handle whatever came my way. As a university graduate, I wanted to show my team that I was there for the long haul, not just passing through. My work life also affected my personal life deeply. Relationships suffered, and understanding partners were hard to find when I might have to cancel dates at a moment's notice due to a call about death. Over time, some friendships faded, and I lost my long-term relationship. But what I learned is that those who truly matter will stay and support you no matter what. The sacrifices I made helped me discover my purpose and the strength to keep going. If you’re going to your first funeral, witnessing a grieving family, or considering a career behind the scenes in funeral services, know it’s a path of empathy, resilience, and deep meaning. My story is just one example of how this profession touches lives — not just those we serve, but also our own.

Some days, this job is heavy. 🤍
As a funeral director, I sit with grief almost every single day. I’ve held the hands of mothers who’ve lost children, comforted families in their darkest hour, and learned that death doesn’t wait for convenient timing. People often ask me how I do this work without it breaking me. Honestly? Some

Some families teach us things we carry for the rest of our lives.
Years ago, I cared for a family who lost their little girl — just 3 years old, after what began as an ordinary afternoon at the playground. I think of her often. Not just for the sadness of that day, but the reminder she left me with: to hold my own children a little closer, a little longer.

Nobody wants to talk about death. I’ve built my life doing exactly that. Most people avoid the topic. Until they’re forced to face it. As a funeral director, I’ve sat with families in moments they never imagined. And I’ve realised something quietly universal: It’s never really about deat
