I didn’t realize how deeply my attachment style was shaping my relationships until I found myself repeating the same patterns over and over again.

Sometimes I was chasing love…

Other times, I was pushing it away.

Both came from the same root: I didn’t feel safe.

So I decided to sit with myself.

To stop blaming love and start healing the way I receive it.

For the past 14 days, I’ve been journaling through The Attachment Theory Workbook + I Love Me More — and everything shifted. This series helped me:

✨ Identify my attachment style

✨ Understand anxious vs. avoidant behavior

✨ Reflect on what a secure connection actually looks like

✨ Build new habits rooted in inner peace, not fear

Each slide in this post includes a journal prompt that guided me to turn inward.

This isn’t a quick fix. It’s deep inner work. But every time I chose myself instead of old patterns, I felt lighter.

It felt like a constant cycle of insecurity. But as I started doing the inner work, especially with resources like The Attachment Theory Workbook and focusing on self-love, I began to recognize the fundamental signs of secure attachment that I now strive for and cultivate in my connections. From my perspective, a secure relationship isn't about perfection; it’s about a profound sense of safety and mutual respect. It's where you genuinely feel seen, heard, and valued for who you are, without needing to perform or constantly seek validation. The OCR prompt, "What safety really looks like," really resonated with me, prompting me to envision a relationship where both partners feel grounded and steady, even amidst life's challenges. It's a space where vulnerability is met with compassion, not judgment. Here are some of the key signs of a secure relationship that I've learned to identify and actively work on fostering: Open and Honest Communication: This is paramount. In a secure bond, there's a freedom to express your needs, fears, and desires without fear of abandonment or ridicule. My partner and I are learning to listen to understand, not just to respond, creating a space where difficult conversations can happen constructively. It's a stark contrast to my past, where I often held back to avoid conflict. Mutual Trust and Reliability: Feeling safe to be vulnerable comes from knowing your partner is reliable and consistent. This means they follow through on their words, and you can truly depend on them. For me, it's about building a foundation where I don't constantly question intentions or worry about being let down. This trust allows me to truly relax into the relationship. Healthy Independence and Interdependence: A secure relationship allows for both individuality and togetherness. We support each other's personal growth and interests, understanding that having separate lives enhances our shared one. It's not about being enmeshed or overly distant, but finding a balance where both partners feel autonomous yet deeply connected. This helps me feel steady and seen, as the OCR mentioned about building a secure future. Empathy and Compassion: When conflicts arise, or one of us is struggling, there's an inherent ability to understand and share each other's feelings. It’s about offering comfort and support without judgment. I've learned that a secure partner doesn't minimize your emotions but validates them, creating a truly supportive environment. Respect for Boundaries: The OCR wisely stated, "Boundaries aren't walls. They're bridges back to yourself." This has been a huge revelation. In a secure relationship, boundaries are clear, respected, and communicated openly. This ensures both partners feel their space, time, and emotional needs are honored, leading to greater peace and security for everyone involved. Unconditional Acceptance: This is where the idea of "You deserve love that doesn't require performance" truly comes alive. In a secure connection, you feel loved and accepted for who you are, flaws and all. There’s no need to constantly prove your worth or change yourself to be loved. This acceptance is incredibly liberating and forms the bedrock of genuine intimacy. Recognizing these signs has transformed how I approach relationships, both romantic and otherwise. It’s a continuous process of self-awareness and intentional practice, but knowing what a secure attachment looks and feels like is the first step toward building that safer, healthier, and more fulfilling future.
