Functional depression

2025/5/28 Edited to

... Read moreI remember those days vividly. On the outside, I was the "strong one," always responsible, always putting on a brave face. My life looked "all together," but secretly, I felt like I was falling apart. That's the insidious nature of functional depression – it’s "the pain nobody sees." You might be acing your job, managing your household, or being the rock for your friends, all while crumbling on the inside. For so long, I thought something was wrong with me because I wasn't visibly incapacitated. I wasn't staying in bed all day, yet I would feel numb inside, going through the motions. I’d say I was "fine," but I was often crying when no one's watching. It felt like I was just surviving and slowly killing my spirit, rather than truly living. It’s an exhausting cycle of pretending, and it takes a toll. One of the hardest parts was the invalidation, often self-imposed. Because I could still function, I questioned if my pain was 'real enough.' But I need you to hear this: Your pain is real, even if no one sees it. It is valid, even if no one sees it. You don't have to fake it inside just to keep the image together. This isn't about weakness; it's about being human. So, what helped me start to stop hiding my hurt? Acknowledging it: The first step was admitting to myself, 'Okay, this isn't just a bad mood. This is something deeper.' Reading about functional depression and seeing my experiences reflected in others was a huge relief – suddenly, I wasn't alone. Finding one safe person: I started by confiding in one trusted friend. Just saying, 'I'm struggling, even though I look fine,' was incredibly freeing. You do not need to suffer in silence. Small, consistent self-care: It wasn't about grand gestures. It was about tiny things: a 10-minute walk, listening to a favorite song, setting a boundary by saying 'no.' These small acts of kindness to myself slowly chipped away at the numbness. Challenging the 'strong one' narrative: I realized being strong doesn't mean never struggling. It means acknowledging your struggles and seeking support. You are not broken, and you are not weak for feeling this way. If you recognize yourself in any of this, please know that you are not alone. There's a whole community of us who understand 'the pain nobody sees.' You are human, and your well-being matters. It's time to stop just surviving and start truly living. If this hits home, reach out, talk to someone, or consider seeking professional help. Your journey to healing is worth it.

This is the truth! I was a functional drug addict along with functional depression. one validated the other, back and forth depending on the day.

Signs of Functional Depression
In sophomore year of college I had a big mental breakdown and was diagnosed with clinical depression. It was so bad that I couldn’t get out of bed and was in the process of dropping out of school. Instead, I got medication for it and went to therapy to get me back to what I thought was equilibrium.
