As a parent living in downtown Toronto, I have witnessed firsthand the ongoing struggle with school overcrowding. It's frustrating to see over 100 students crammed into classrooms, impacting both learning and well-being. Despite promises and land available for schools, the reality is that these spaces have remained undeveloped for elementary schools, with condos rising instead. Meanwhile, discussions have centered around airport expansion, particularly the bigger runways and larger airplanes at Billy Bishop Airport, which will inevitably increase noise pollution and traffic congestion downtown. This shift in focus seems misguided when public transit infrastructure itself faces constant delays, especially around Union Station, which serves as a critical hub for GO and VIA trains. Instead of expanding airports, the city urgently needs investments in transportation improvements and additional educational facilities to support families. The debate highlights a broader issue about leadership priorities and the importance of electing officials with strong educational backgrounds who understand community needs. Expanding airport capacity without addressing school shortages or public transit challenges could lead to increased dissatisfaction among Toronto parents and residents. From my experience, a balanced approach is crucial—one that keeps community interests at the forefront. More schools would alleviate pressure on existing institutions, support children’s development, and maintain the vibrancy of neighborhoods. At the same time, transport infrastructure upgrades that reduce delays would benefit all commuters. Ultimately, investing in people and their futures through education should take precedence over airport expansion, which primarily serves economic growth. Only by addressing these core issues can Toronto continue to thrive and remain a city where families feel supported and heard.
