When your mom is out with her friends and have not

2/16 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, Lemon8 fam, hands up if you know this feeling: Mom announces she's going out with her friends for the night. You're thinking, 'Yay, freedom!' But then the reality sets in. It's just you and dad at home, and suddenly, you have nothing to do. Seriously, it’s a universal truth, right? One minute you're imagining all the wild things you'll get up to, the next you're staring at the ceiling, wondering how to fill the hours. I swear, my dad is home, and he's usually either glued to the TV watching sports or trying to get me to help with some 'project' that involves tools I've never seen before. Bless his heart, he tries, but sometimes his idea of fun is... well, different from mine! It's not that he's a bad parent, absolutely not, but the vibe just shifts when Mom, the usual planner and entertainer, isn't around. The house gets quieter, or sometimes, paradoxically, louder with his chosen background noise. So, what's a person to do when their mother is not home and boredom starts to creep in? I've developed a few strategies over the years to survive (and even enjoy!) these 'Mom's Night Out' evenings. 1. Embrace the Solo Adventure: This is my go-to. If I truly have nothing to do, I'll dive into a book I've been meaning to read, start a new series on Netflix, or even try a new craft. Last time, I attempted a complicated drawing tutorial I found online. It didn't turn out perfectly, but it killed a couple of hours and felt like a small win! It’s a great chance to do something just for you without any distractions. 2. The Dad-and-Me Challenge: Sometimes, I try to engage Dad in something *I* like. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's pretty memorable. We once had a 'bake-off' where we both tried to make cookies from scratch. Mine were edible; his... well, they were an experience. But we laughed a lot! Or maybe suggest a board game, a simple card game, or even just putting on some music you both like and having a chill evening. It’s a unique bonding opportunity that doesn’t happen as often when Mom is around. 3. The Productive Power Hour: Okay, this one isn't always 'fun,' but it's satisfying. If I'm really feeling restless, I'll pick one small task I've been putting off. Tidy my closet, organize my desk, or even just plan out my week. It makes me feel accomplished, and then I can relax without that nagging feeling of undone chores. Plus, Mom always appreciates coming back to a slightly tidier home! 😉 4. Connect with Friends (virtually or IRL if allowed): If my actual friends are available, a quick video call or group chat can instantly banish boredom. Sometimes just sharing funny memes about 'my dad is home' situations makes you feel less alone. Or, if you're old enough and Mom has given the okay, maybe a quick visit to a friend's house. Ultimately, those 'when mother is not home' evenings can be a bit of a mixed bag. But instead of just scrolling endlessly, I've learned to lean into the quiet, or create my own fun. What are your go-to activities when Mom’s out with her friends and you’re left to your own devices? Share your tips below – I’m always looking for new ideas!

Everyone meet pepper! The biggest thing I can recommend is my last slide. Having a carrier that a cat can move around in is huge!! She used to meow non stop on car rides and try to claw out, it was horrible. Then we got this carrier and started leaving it on the ground. She started exploring it, pl
