Finding Yourself in the Little Things

Sometimes, we make a small change hoping to feel different; refreshed, confident, like a new version of ourselves. For my 24th birthday, I wanted that feeling, but nothing too dramatic. I asked TikTok for ideas, and someone suggested a blended money piece. It seemed like the perfect subtle change.

I got it done, but instead of feeling refreshed, I felt uncomfortable in my own skin. I wore my favorite shirt. Curled my hair the way I like. But no matter what I did, I just didn’t feel like me. That feeling stuck with me throughout my birthday and the entire week. It’s frustrating when something meant to boost your confidence does the opposite.

Eventually, I got it fixed; back to a version that feels natural, familiar. And the past two days? They’re the most like myself I’ve felt all week.

But in that in-between time, when I wasn’t feeling my best, I leaned on the little things that bring me joy:

• Walking on my treadmill

• Trying new recipes

• Home projects

• Playing my favorite game

• Focusing in on work

• Bubble baths

Even when I didn’t feel great about myself, those small joys kept me grounded. They reminded me that my happiness isn’t tied to how I look or whether I made the “right” choice with my hair.. it’s in the everyday things that make me feel at home in my life.

A few years ago, in 2021, I went through a phase where I hated everything about myself. Even the hobbies I once loved didn’t feel like mine anymore. Looking back, I wish I had held onto those small joys instead of pushing them away. Now, I know how important they are.

If life ever feels off; whether it’s a bad haircut, an unexpected setback, or just a rough day.. having those simple, comforting things to fall back on makes all the difference.

So if you’re going through something similar, I encourage you to make a list of the little things that bring you joy. What helps you feel grounded when life doesn’t go as planned?

... Read moreIn our fast-paced lives, those simple moments often get overlooked. Engaging in activities that bring joy—like cooking, exercising, or enjoying a relaxing bath—can have profound effects on our mental well-being. Recent studies show that these 'little things' foster resilience and promote a positive mindset, especially when feelings of self-doubt arise. Creating routines that incorporate these small sources of joy can lead to increased mindfulness, enabling individuals to reconnect with their authentic selves. Keeping a journal of joyful experiences, trying out new hobbies, or simply taking walks can be effective in nurturing one's mental health. Furthermore, research highlights the importance of self-compassion during challenging times. Instead of harshly judging ourselves for bad days or choices, allowing room for self-kindness can facilitate healing. Consider regularly reflecting on your day to find at least one joyful moment, no matter how small. This practice not only trains the brain to look for positivity but also enhances emotional resilience, encouraging a healthier relationship with oneself. If life feels overwhelming, remember: it's often the simplest joys that remind us who we are and bring us back to our center.

Starter Pack for finding career clarity
I used to think “career clarity” meant having a 10-year plan, a perfect major, and a dream job title by age 22. But the truth? Career clarity is rarely a lightning bolt.. it’s built through small, intentional steps. It’s about understanding yourself just as much as understanding the job market.
