Sourdough Starter from scratch

Samantha officially has her new home and her new name! Day 4 of making sourdough starter from scratch! I didn’t document the first 3 days because, well, I didn’t think I’d actually be able to do it! lol. But she grew pretty well last night and is getting that sour stank.

... Read moreCreating a sourdough starter is a rewarding process that opens up a world of baking possibilities. It begins with simple ingredients: flour and water. Each day, you will combine these ingredients and allow natural yeast and bacteria to cultivate. It’s important to use unbleached flour, as bleaching can reduce the yeast's ability to develop. On day one, mix equal parts flour and water and allow it to sit at room temperature. As the days go by, you'll notice bubbles forming, indicating fermentation. After several days, you will see a rise in the mixture, and it will develop a tangy aroma, showing it's ready for baking. Remember to keep feeding your starter regularly and to use it in your baking experiments! Joining communities such as #sourdoughlife and #sourdoughjourney can provide additional support and inspiration along the way. Happy baking!

Sourdough starter : for beginners
TIP #1 : For your first measurement, weigh the flour using a kitchen scale so you can get an idea of how the mixture should feel. Do not weigh the measuring cup! It should be like a thick paste, like peanut butter. If you need to add a little more water to incorporate the flour, that is OK too!
