☠️ Oxygen Toxicity: Silent Danger That Deep Divers Must Know

☠️ Oxygen Toxicity: Silent Danger That Deep Divers Must Know

Many people think that "the more oxygen, the better."

But in scuba diving, the truth is the opposite...

Oxygen with too high pressure can become "toxic to the body."

And this is something deep-line divers, technical lines or Nitrox users need to seriously understand.

🫁 Oxygen Toxicity?

Oxygen Toxicity is a condition in which the body receives oxygen under excessive Partial Pressure.

Until it affects the nervous system and lungs.

The deeper the dive → increased pressure → higher PPO value ❣ → increased risk.

⚠️ Type of Oxygen Toxicity

1️⃣ CNS Oxygen Toxicity (Central Nervous System)

Caused by high PPO ❣ in a short period of time.

Most dangerous because it can cause unconsciousness underwater.

Warning symptoms (easy to remember with the word CONVULSIONS):

🔹 C - Convulsions (seizures)

🔹 O - Visual disturbances (abnormal vision)

🔹 N - Nausea (nausea)

🔹 V - Twitching (muscle twitch)

🔹 U - Irritability (Unusual Frustration)

🔹 L - Lightheadedness (Dizzy)

🔹 S - Seizure (unconscious seizure)

🔹 I - Impaired hearing (tinnitus)

🔹 O - Orientation loss (confused)

🔹 N - Numbness (Tea or Thrilling)

👉 If an underwater seizure occurs = risk of drowning immediately.

2️⃣ Pulmonary Oxygen Toxicity (lung poisoning)

Caused by prolonged exposure to high concentrations of oxygen.

Often found in technical diving or using O ☁ during the distance.

Symptoms found:

• Dry cough

• Chest pain

• Shortness of breath

• Reduced lung capacity

🤿 When is the risk?

✔. Diving very deep.

✔ Use Nitrox% High

✔ Use pure O ❣ to symbolize

✔. Long underwater.

✔ Heavy exertion / stress / cold

📊 PPO values to know

• 1.4 ATA → Safe Value for General Diving

• 1.6 ATA → Maximum limit (only use decompression range)

👉 Beyond this = risk increases rapidly.

🛑 How to prevent Oxygen Toxicity

✅ Plan a scheduled dive or Dive Computer.

✅ Check Nitrox Maximum Depth (MOD)

✅ Don't use the wrong kind of gas.

✅ Avoid heavy exertion underwater.

✅ Keep your body warm.

✅ Training before using Nitrox or scuba diving.

🌊 Why should a rookie know?

Even Oxygen Toxicity is often associated with scuba diving and technique.

But understanding the basics from the beginning will help you:

✔ Dive safer.

✔. Plan the dive right.

✔ Confidently advanced to high-altitude diving.

The underwater world is beautiful... but safety always comes first. 🤿
