What I’ve Learned as a First-Year Principal

By @LearningWithDrJ

If there’s one thing this year has taught me, it’s this:

Never ask your staff to do something you wouldn’t do yourself.

In leadership, people are always watching — not just what you say, but how you show up.

Whether it’s covering a duty, stepping into a tough conversation, or helping clean up after an event — I’ve learned that the most powerful kind of leadership is shared.

It doesn’t mean doing everything.

It means modeling the mindset you expect from others.

When your team sees you lead with humility and hustle, they’re more likely to follow your lead with heart.

Why this matters:

• It builds trust

• It earns respect

• It creates a culture where everyone feels valued — and responsible

The bar you set with your actions will always speak louder than the expectations written on paper.

Fellow leaders, what’s one lesson you’ve learned in your leadership journey so far?

Drop it in the comments — let’s grow together.

... Read moreEffective leadership in education, especially for first-year principals, requires more than strategic planning and delegation; it demands embodying the behaviors and attitudes you expect from your team. The principle of "Don't ask your staff to do something you wouldn't do yourself" encapsulates the essence of servant leadership, where leading by example builds credibility and motivates others to engage wholeheartedly. Shared leadership cultivates a collaborative culture where responsibilities are distributed, and trust flourishes. Principals who actively participate in daily duties, confront challenges openly, and support their staff create an environment where everyone feels valued and accountable. This approach not only enhances morale but also improves the overall school climate, positively impacting student outcomes. Moreover, setting the tone through consistent actions rather than relying solely on written expectations fosters authenticity and transparency. When educators witness their leader's commitment and humility, they are more inclined to emulate these qualities, reinforcing a culture of respect and perseverance. Incorporating servant leadership principles helps first-year principals navigate the complexities of school administration with empathy and effectiveness. By leading with actions, they establish a foundation for sustained success and community trust. Emerging research also highlights that school leaders who engage regularly with staff in meaningful ways reduce burnout and increase job satisfaction, creating a more stable and motivated workforce. Therefore, embracing these leadership lessons during the initial year sets a trajectory for impactful educational leadership and lasting positive change.

What I've learned as a FTM in a year!
1. Everyone makes assumptions about your parenting/ love life! - don't listen to all of the "just wait"s and unsolicited advice - people will never be happy if you're just dating, engaged, or even married, there's a lot of opinions and assumptions about where you and your part
