Documenting my reno journey. A carpenter myself

5/20 Edited to

... Read moreStarting a BTO renovation can be both exciting and daunting, especially when you decide to take on the project yourself as a carpenter. Drawing from my personal experience, one of the crucial steps is thorough planning of the flat layout, including spaces like the main bedroom, study, living and dining areas, kitchen, and service yard. Having a clear floor plan helps optimize space and ensures all household needs are met. During my renovation, I found it very useful to focus on multipurpose usage of rooms—for example, designing the study to double as a guest bedroom when needed. Air-conditioning ledges and service yards are often overlooked but require early consideration for installation and maintenance access. Paying attention to the positioning of bathrooms and shelters also impacts overall comfort and household flow. Carpentry skills allowed me to customize cabinetry and storage solutions that suit my lifestyle, enhancing both aesthetics and functionality. If you’re undertaking a reno journey, embracing modular design and quality materials is key to durability. Above all, patience and adaptability are essential, as unexpected challenges often arise. Sharing progress openly, such as through forums tagged #reno and #bto, not only helps you get advice but also motivates you to keep the project moving forward. This hands-on experience deepened my appreciation for home design and empowered me to create a living space tailored perfectly to my family's needs.
