Tally is a young girl living in a world where everyone undergoes a cosmetic operation at the age of sixteen to become pretty. She sneaks into New Pretty Town, a city where only the pretties live, and befriends Shay, a girl who is also turning sixteen soon. However, Shay reveals that she does not want to become a pretty. Shay convinces Tally to escape to a town called The Smoke where everyone is beautiful and treated equally. Tally is supposed to get her surgery but is told she must find Shay first. In The Smoke, she meets David whose parents had also once escaped there. They reveal a secret to Tally about the operation to become pretty. Tally then had another big choice to make. Now her and David must save EVERYBODY.
