Having read 'Girl of Lore' up to 43%, I was genuinely intrigued by its paranormal elements and references, especially with the nods to classic horror character names like Mina and Harker, which set high expectations. Unfortunately, the story did not meet my hopes, primarily because the protagonist felt overly idealized and lacked authenticity, which made it hard to connect with her journey. The attempt to weave in OCD traits through the main character’s habit of hanging out in cemeteries was interesting but felt superficial and not reflective of the real challenges faced by those with such experiences. In my experience, effective representation of mental health issues needs thoughtful nuance, which was somewhat absent here. The writing style reminded me of early TV scripts, which might appeal to younger audiences but didn't resonate with me as a more mature reader seeking depth. However, I appreciated the creepy atmosphere and the potential in the concept; it’s clear the author aimed to blend horror with YA fantasy, which is a tricky balance. If you're drawn to horror-themed young adult novels that channel the nostalgic vibes of Fear Street or Monster Squad, you might find some enjoyable moments in 'Girl of Lore.' Still, I recommend tempering expectations for character development and narrative sophistication. This book might serve better as a light, themed read rather than a profound story on OCD or complex character arcs.
