Healthcare Burnout Is Real — And No One Prepares U

Ever since I was a kid in and out of the hospital, I knew I wanted to work in healthcare.

I went to The City of Medicine Academy, earned a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, and then completed PTA school. When I graduated, I was ready to take on the world.

But here’s the reality:

As a healthcare worker, I don’t get sick days. If I were to have a baby, there’s no guaranteed maternity leave. Holidays off? Not a given. As a Physical Therapist Assistant, I put my body on the line every single day to help others walk, stand, and regain their independence.

And I know some people might say, “Well, you chose this career.”

But let’s be real — the values you place on work-life balance, advancement, and stability at 18 are very different from those you hold in your 30s.

There’s little to no room for advancement in rehab therapy. I’ve held the same title and responsibilities since day one. If I want to make more money, I have to change jobs — unlike my friends in corporate who can grow within a company. On top of that, insurance companies continue to cut corners, reducing the care patients can receive. And honestly, if someone needs help, it shouldn’t be up for debate.

I still love helping people. I still believe in the power of physical therapy.

But I’m starting to feel like I’ve outgrown what I do for a living.

“Are you in healthcare or another field that feels undervalued? I’d love to hear your story—let’s start a real conversation in the comments.”

... Read moreHealthcare burnout is a pressing issue affecting many professionals in the industry, particularly in rehab therapy. As healthcare workers deal with increasing workloads and insufficient support, their passion for helping others can become overshadowed by feelings of undervaluation and exhaustion. Recent studies indicate that nearly 50% of healthcare practitioners experience symptoms of burnout, resulting in a detrimental cycle that impacts both their personal well-being and patient care. In addition, the pandemic exacerbated these challenges, bringing to light issues of staff shortages and high turnover rates. Many healthcare workers feel the pressure of being on the frontline without adequate time for self-care or mental health support. As a result, employers must recognize the importance of mental health resources, flexible work policies, and career development opportunities to cultivate a supportive work environment. Those who find themselves in similar situations are encouraged to seek safe spaces to share their experiences and connect with others facing similar challenges. Starting conversations about undervalued careers can lead to better recognition, support, and improvements in workplace policies. Together, as a community, healthcare professionals can advocate for a more sustainable and fulfilling work environment.
