... Read moreWhen I first started birdwatching, I often confused Cooper’s Hawks with Red-tailed Hawks because they share similar habitats and can look quite alike at a quick glance. However, over time I learned a few distinct features that make telling them apart much easier in the field. The tail is one of the most helpful clues. Cooper’s Hawks have a long, slim tail with a rounded tip and evenly spaced bands, which gives them a sleek profile. In contrast, Red-tailed Hawks have a shorter, chunkier tail with a broad, squared-off tip that often shows faint banding near the end. This tail shape difference is noticeable both when the birds are perched and in flight. Body size and shape also provide hints. Cooper’s Hawks are generally slimmer with longer tails, while Red-tailed Hawks appear bulkier with broader wings and a more robust chest, often displaying a reddish chest and checkered wings pattern. Their flight styles differ too: Cooper’s Hawks glide more swiftly and maneuver agilely through trees, while Red-tailed Hawks soar higher with broader wing strokes. Using these distinguishing features has made my birdwatching outings much more rewarding. Next time you spot a hawk, take a moment to observe these details—tail length and shape, body size, and flight behavior. With practice, you’ll quickly build confidence in telling these impressive raptors apart, enriching your nature experience and identification skills.

Correction: the last tail shown should’ve been the Red-shouldered Hawk tail, not the Cooper’s Hawk tail 🪶 The version in the Smart Bird ID app has the corrected comparison 🐦 Sorry about that!
