Unlike many bird species where both parents share duties, female hummingbirds take on every responsibility alone. This includes selecting and building a tiny, cup-shaped nest often no larger than a walnut, carefully crafted from soft plant fibers and spider silk to hold the fragile eggs securely. Once the eggs are laid, the female tirelessly incubates them, keeping them warm around the clock without leaving for extended periods to avoid exposing them to predators or unfavorable weather. After the eggs hatch, feeding the chicks becomes her sole mission. She makes frequent trips to gather nectar and tiny insects, crucial for the rapid growth and development of her babies. Their ability to balance such a demanding workload is a testament to nature’s marvels and the hummingbird’s evolutionary adaptations.
