Think All Hummingbirds Are Green? 👀

6/18 Edited to

... Read moreHummingbirds are often thought to be predominantly green, but as anyone who’s spent time birdwatching can tell you, these fascinating birds come in a dazzling array of colors and personalities. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird, commonly seen in eastern North America, is known for its striking male’s ruby-red throat patch that flashes brilliantly in sunlight. This tiny bird is a favorite for many because of its classic hummingbird appearance and its fascinating migratory behavior. Moving west to the Pacific Coast, Anna’s Hummingbird stands out with its dazzling pink-red crown and throat. Unlike many hummingbirds that are more elusive, Anna’s can often be seen year-round in urban gardens where they adapt well to human presence. Watching their iridescent feathers shimmer in the sun is truly a delight. The Black-chinned Hummingbird, found across much of western North America, wears a dark throat that can flash a thin violet band when catching the light just right. This subtle yet stunning feature makes identification easier for birdwatchers and adds to the allure of spotting them in the wild. Then there is the bold and fiery Rufous Hummingbird, easily recognized by its vibrant orange plumage. This species is known for its strong personality and impressive migratory journey through the Pacific Northwest and western United States. They are notoriously territorial, often chasing away larger birds from their feeding areas. In my own birdwatching experience, spotting these different species has added richness to my appreciation of hummingbirds. Each has its own beauty and behavior traits worth observing. Whether you’re a seasoned bird lover or just starting, paying attention to the throat colors, plumage hues, and regional habitats can help you identify these incredible birds and enjoy their presence even more. What I’ve learned is that hummingbirds are not just tiny green jewels but a spectrum of colors and characteristics that bring joy to every backyard or natural setting they visit.

Shutter speed is going to create the "mood" of your photo. Are we going fast or slow? Do we want our photo soft or sharp? Do we want to catch the rotation of the earth in one photo or do we want to see the detail in a flying hummingbirds wings? Shutter speed determines it all. #photography
