Pick your fork ~ neurospicy version

2025/6/28 Edited to

... Read moreThat 'Neurodivergent Fork Challenge' meme really hit home for me! It's not just about picking a fork; it's about finding that perfect piece of silverware that doesn't send your senses into overdrive. For many of us who are neurodivergent, meal times can be a sensory minefield, and cutlery plays a huge role. It's not just about the food; it's the weight, the balance, the texture, and even the sound of the fork against the plate. I know I'm not alone in having a 'preferred' fork or even a whole set of 'autism friendly forks' that just feel *right*. When I look at the six different metal forks in that meme, my brain immediately starts processing each one. Is the handle smooth or does it have ridges? Ridges can be a deal-breaker for me – that tactile sensation can be incredibly distracting. I definitely prefer a smooth, almost seamless handle, much like options 1, 3, or 5 from the meme. There's something about a simple, non-descript handle that just feels safe and comfortable in my hand. No unexpected bumps or cold, jarring metallic textures. Beyond texture, the weight and balance are crucial for neurodivergent silverware. A fork that's too light can feel flimsy and unsatisfying, almost like it's going to bend. Too heavy, and it can become cumbersome, requiring too much effort. The ideal fork has a reassuring heft without being tiring to hold during a meal. And the balance! If it's top-heavy, it feels awkward; if it's perfectly balanced, it just disappears into the act of eating. Then there are the tines. Are they too sharp, too blunt, too wide apart? Some forks have tines that just feel 'wrong' in your mouth, or they don't pick up food effectively, leading to frustration. This is all part of the 'neurodivergent fork selection process' – it's a careful calibration of personal sensory input. It's not just forks, either. Spoons are a whole other story – often even more challenging to find the 'right' one due to the bowl shape and lip feel. And knives? While less about tactile mouthfeel, the handle grip and balance are just as important. Some neurodivergent individuals might even seek out specific types of knife handles for their ergonomic or unique grip properties, though for me, it's generally about that smooth, comfortable handle across all cutlery. So, if you're like me and navigating the world of neurodivergent silverware, don't be afraid to be picky! Here are a few tips to help you in your own 'neurodivergent fork selection process': Pay attention to textures: Smooth, matte, polished – what feels best in your hand and mouth? Consider weight and balance: Does it feel substantial but not heavy? Handle shape: Is it easy to grip? Does it have any uncomfortable edges? Trial and error: Don't be afraid to try different types from friends or restaurants (if appropriate!) to see what works for you. Ultimately, the goal is to make mealtime a comfortable, enjoyable experience, free from unnecessary sensory distractions. What are your must-haves for your ideal neurodivergent fork or silverware?

An important message for my neurodivergent crew
I am so tired of the negative messages from neurotypical society, many of them say things like: "You are only worth what you put into the world." "You should just try harder." "It's easy, just do this." If you are neurodivergent (not just adhd/autism- any type!),
