Giant Circles in the Desert?

I have no idea what these giant circles in the desert must be. Google tells me they’re for “circle irrigation” but it’s near impossible to grow anything in the desert. The soil in Las Vegas inhospitable, the heat in Nevada is unbearable and getting water out that far has to be expensive. Any ideas?
