How stress is affecting your health🤯

If you’ve been feeling exhausted, forgetful, tense, or like you’re always “on,” it may be worth paying attention to what your body is trying to tell you.

Researchers use the term “weathering” to describe how years of chronic stress can take a toll on the body over time. This concept was introduced by Dr. Arline T. Geronimus, a public health researcher, to explain how prolonged exposure to stress may contribute to earlier health problems, particularly among Black women.

Some signs that chronic stress may be affecting your body include:

🤍 Constant fatigue, even after sleeping

🤍 Brain fog or trouble concentrating

🤍 Tight shoulders, headaches, or muscle tension

🤍 Feeling like you can never truly relax

These symptoms can have many different causes and don’t automatically mean you’re experiencing weathering. If they’re persistent or concerning, it’s important to speak with a healthcare professional. Chronic stress is one factor that may contribute for some people.

The good news? Your nervous system can be supported through small, consistent habits. Healing doesn’t happen overnight, but every moment of rest, every boundary you set, and every act of self-care matters.

*** Research: Inspired by the Weathering Hypothesis developed by Dr. Arline T. Geronimus and research on chronic stress and allostatic load by Dr. Bruce McEwen.

... Read moreLiving with chronic stress can feel like carrying an invisible weight that drains your energy and clouds your mind daily. I’ve personally struggled with feeling constantly tired and mentally foggy, even when I thought I was getting enough rest. It wasn’t until I learned about the concept of "weathering"—how chronic stress wears down the body over time—that I began understanding the root causes of my symptoms. One crucial realization was recognizing the persistent muscle tension in my shoulders and frequent headaches as my body’s way of holding onto stress long after the stressor has passed. Small, daily habits made a big difference in helping me support my nervous system. For example, taking slow, deep breaths multiple times a day helped calm my racing mind. Going outside for morning sunlight—even just for five minutes—lifted my mood and reset my energy. Setting clear boundaries around my time and energy was equally transformative. It was challenging at first to say no, but protecting my rest became necessary for recovery. Incorporating moments of joy, like listening to music or gentle stretching, slowly shifted my nervous system from survival mode to a state of calm and healing. It’s important to note that chronic stress symptoms can overlap with other health issues, so consulting a healthcare professional is essential if symptoms persist. However, by implementing consistent, manageable strategies to regulate your nervous system, you allow your body moments to rest and repair. Remember, healing is a gradual process, and every small act of self-care counts towards long-term wellness.
