tried shutting up but it wasn’t for me
Writing poetry has often been my way of navigating the complicated emotions that come with keeping silent when it feels easier to just speak out. I remember times when I tried to hush my thoughts, to shut up about what truly mattered to me, but quickly realized that silence didn’t bring the peace I was hoping for—it only deepened my longing for connection and understanding. There’s something deeply human about yearning for a place to call home, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually. The poem’s reflection on 'chasing home' resonates with me because it captures that feeling of searching and sometimes feeling that home is something elusive, slipping through your fingers like tap water. This metaphor highlights how fleeting comfort and belonging can be when suppressed by silence. The critique of modern life’s systems – how humans have complicated existence through money and labor – also struck a chord. Many of us feel caught in a web of societal expectations that encourage silence over dissent, compliance over authentic self-expression. Yet, as this poem suggests, letting go of that silence is a courageous act of reclaiming one’s voice and soul. In sharing my own experiences with this internal conflict, I’ve learned that poetry and creative expression become a lifeline when the world seems overwhelming. The hashtags like #poetry, #hopecore, and #yearning point toward communities and emotional states that embrace vulnerability and hope. Ultimately, embracing voice over silence fosters healing and growth. Whether through writing, speaking, or other forms of expression, finding ways to be heard helps us reconnect with ourselves and the natural world around us, breaking free from the chains of meaningless toil and societal facades. This poem’s raw honesty inspires me to keep searching for that authentic home, wherever it lies, and to never stop expressing the truths within.
