Context: There had always been a comfortable closeness among the three of them. They had been classmates long before she and her boyfriend started dating, so their little trio friendship naturally continued even after the relationship formed. Here goes her story:
One day, I needed to call my best friend about something urgent, but my phone died. So I grabbed my boyfriend’s phone and called her. The moment she picked up, she answered with a cheerful, “babe!”
I froze.
For a second I didn’t even know how to respond, I cleared my throat and said, “…Hello?”
She paused, then laughed lightly and said, “Hahaha what’s up! I figured it was you.”

“Do you think something is going on between me and your boyfriend? Is that what you’re implying?”
