How Long Distance Helped Us Grow Individually

My boyfriend and I have been together for 6 years and 2 years of that time was spent long distance. Like any relationship, long distance was hard, but it also taught us how to grow individually.

01. The Opportunity to Explore

We started dating in our early 20s and the time spent apart allowed me the opportunity to explore my own personal interests. Being that we were both in our early 20s, I think that was a great time for us to still learn and understand what we want and don't want in this life. Having the opportunity to explore my own individuality helped me gain clarity on who I want to be and what I expect out of this life I am living.

02. Individual Experiences and Lessons

By the same token, having that sense of independence offered a wide gate for both of us to experience new things that the world has to offer, separately. This was actually great for our relationship because it introduced us to more friends, lessons, and experiences to share with one another during the times we actually got to be together. The more lessons we gathered during our time apart gave us a wide breadth of stories to share with one another.

03. Increased Gratitude

I think after the honeymoon phase of a relationship, it can be easy to enmesh into each other's lives. When we decided we were going to try long distance, it made the relationship much sweeter. Days or months spent apart opened our gratitude for one another and now that we have been living together for a few years, it still isn't something we take for granted.
