“A sick dog goes back to eat what it could not keep in its stomach. A fool goes back and makes the same mistakes again. When strangers are arguing, only a fool joins the argument. It would be better if he took hold of a wild dog's ears! If a person deceives his friend and then laughs about it, he is as bad as that crazy person. Without wood, a fire stops burning. When people do not tell their friends' secrets, quarrels stop. But when a fire has wood, it continues to burn. When people love to quarrel, there will always be arguments. If a man digs a deep hole as a trap, he will fall into it himself. If a man pushes a stone to fall on someone, it will fall back on him. If you tell lies, it shows that you hate other people. If you deceive people with sweet words, you will destroy them.”

This teaches us there's a time to respond, especially if our silence allows foolishness to triumph or harm others. It's about discerning when to speak up to prevent greater damage or to correct a misconception, without letting ourselves become consumed by the foolishness. This balance is key and something I'm continuously learning to master. It helps us avoid making the same mistake twice by thoughtlessly engaging every time. The chapter also strongly emphasizes the dangers of deceit and hidden malice. Proverbs 26:23-25 speaks of "smooth lips and a wicked heart" and how a person may express kindness while harboring evil intentions. This really highlights the importance of spiritual discernment. We're called to look beyond surface appearances and sweet words, because someone who deceives people with sweet words can truly be dangerous. It makes me think about those times I've encountered individuals who seem charming but their actions don't align with their words. Then, there's Proverbs 26:28, which clearly states, "A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin." This verse, along with others in the chapter, exposes the destructive nature of lies and flattery. It’s a sobering thought that those who lie often do so out of a deep-seated hatred or malice, and their flattering words are merely a tool for their own agenda, leading to ruin for those they target.
