My odd Master’s landed me a Marketing Manager job

I didn’t follow a “normal” path into marketing—because I didn’t take a “normal” degree.

I started in Marriage & Family Therapy, then pivoted into Exercise Science + Marketing. Weird mix? Maybe. But it landed me a full-time role as a Marketing Manager just 2 months before graduation.

Here’s how it worked in my favor:

→ Health + science background = perfect for a wellness brand

→ Marketing classes = strategy + writing foundation

→ Therapy training = people skills that make teamwork easy

→ Pivoting mid-degree = showed I’m adaptable (and bold)

Now I handle:

• Social strategy

• Email + website copy

• Print design & branding

• International trade shows

• Interview prep & press content

Degree: MFT → Exercise Science + Marketing + MFT

Job: Marketing Manager

Industry: Nutraceuticals

Lesson? Your degree doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours!!

... Read moreIn today's competitive job market, diverse educational backgrounds can significantly enhance your employability, particularly in fields like marketing. Many companies value adaptability and a multi-faceted approach to problem-solving. For instance, a degree in Marriage & Family Therapy, as well as Exercise Science, offers unique insights into consumer behavior and health trends. This type of background can be particularly advantageous in industries focused on wellness and health, where understanding clients’ needs is paramount. Moreover, marketing roles are increasingly requiring a mix of creative and analytical skills. Skills gained from courses in marketing, combined with therapeutic training, can provide a solid foundation in both strategy development and effective communication. Employers often seek candidates who can bring fresh perspectives to the team, showcasing an ability to approach marketing from different angles, whether that be through social strategy, digital content, or public relations efforts. Networking also plays a crucial role in advancing your career. Engaging with communities on platforms like Lemon8 can provide support and insights from others who have followed non-traditional paths. Sharing success stories or seeking mentorship can greatly aid in your journey. Always remember: your unique experiences can be your strongest asset in the marketing landscape, making you stand out to potential employers.

How I landed ALL my jobs through cold applying… 🤫
Every single one of my post-grad full-time corporate marketing roles I’ve held was landed via cold applying with my resume on LinkedIn. And to make things more shocking, most of them were also via “Easy Apply” where I simply submitted my resume (and maybe asked a few identity related questions).
