Should you be drawing in Greyscale?

🌷This piece is both facial expression and coloring practice. I intended for the expression to be more silly... did it turn out?

🩶Anyways, I have really been vibing with doing a greyscale shading layer with a color map, as you may have noticed from my past posts.

🗺️I was really intimidated by gradient maps at first, but it is surprisingly easy to do in most drawing programs! It really allows me to be intentional with my shading colors and think about the pure light placement.

🍥But at the end of the day, I still kept this sketch loose and didn't go for realism, or an overly rendered look.

How do you think it turned out? Would you try this drawing process?

... Read moreWhen I first started dabbling in digital art, I used to jump straight into color, and honestly, it was a mess! My values were all over the place, and my art often looked flat. That's why I absolutely fell in love with the 'greyscale first' method, and I truly believe it’s a game-changer for anyone wanting to improve their digital painting. It forces you to focus solely on light and shadow, which is the backbone of any compelling drawing. So, why start with greyscale shading? Imagine building a house. You wouldn't paint the walls before ensuring the foundation and structure are solid, right? Greyscale works similarly for art. By laying down all your shadows and highlights in monochrome, you establish the form and depth of your subject without being distracted by color choices. This means you can easily see if your light source is consistent, if your forms are readable, and if your composition has enough contrast. It’s like a cheat code for getting values right! Once your greyscale shading is looking good – you know, like the 'STEP 1 start with a greyscale shading' from my process – the magic really begins with adding color. This is where gradient maps come into play, and they are surprisingly easy to use, even if they sound intimidating at first! In programs like Clip Studio Paint or Procreate, a gradient map essentially takes the light and dark values of your greyscale layer and assigns specific colors to them based on a gradient you create. For example, you can tell it: 'make the darkest parts a deep blue, the mid-tones a warm orange, and the highlights a pale yellow.' It instantly gives your greyscale art a cohesive color palette. This is what I meant by 'STEP 2 Use a gradient map' in my visual guide. Playing around with different gradient presets or creating your own is so much fun and yields unique results every time! After you’ve got your initial colors from the gradient map, the next crucial step, which I illustrated as 'STEP 3 Pick flat colors on a lower layer,' involves adding your base colors. What I do is create a new layer below my greyscale and gradient map layers. On this new layer, I simply block in the main, flat colors for different areas – skin, hair, clothes, background, whatever your subject is. Don't worry about shading here, just get the general hues down. This helps separate elements and gives you a solid foundation for more detailed coloring later. Finally, the 'overlay the flat colors and shading' part, or 'STEP 4 overlay the flat colors and shading' as my images show, is where everything comes together. You'll typically set your greyscale layer to a blending mode like 'Overlay,' 'Soft Light,' or 'Multiply' (experiment to see what works best for your piece!) over your flat color layer. The gradient map layer can then be adjusted with opacity or blending modes too, to fine-tune the overall color mood. This technique allows your meticulously crafted greyscale values to shine through, providing all the shading and lighting information, while the underlying flat colors and gradient map provide the vibrant, rich hues. It's a workflow that genuinely streamlines the coloring process and gives you so much control. If you've been struggling with color in your digital art, seriously, give this greyscale method a try. It’s transformed my workflow, and I think it could do wonders for yours too!
