Drawing a figure every day for a week!!

I haven't posted in a few days, been feeling burnt out on social media honestly. But I have still been making art!!

A discord server I am in is doing Figurevember! Spend at least 10 minutes drawing a figure every day. I am also still working through the online anatomy videos I talked about last time.

☀️Day 1:

You can see it suffers from my problem of making things look too soft! I quickly pivoted to a different style.

☀️Day 3:

Ngl I really like this one, it might be the best one.

☀️Day 5:

I used the rake brush for a lot of my cross hatching to get perfectly spaced lines. I spend the longest amount of time on this one.

☀️Day 6:

I actually turned this into a finished painting! I can share it later.

☀️Day 7:

And here we are day 7. I am still going strong on the challenge and feel excited to make a new collection for week 2 of Figurevember.

Soo... which is your favorite?

... Read moreMy Figurevember journey really highlighted the importance of daily practice, especially when tackling dynamic poses. If you're like me and looking to improve your figure drawing, especially those tricky floating or falling figures, here are some insights I found super helpful during my week of daily sketches! Understanding Dynamic Poses: Capturing the energy of a dynamic pose, like a handstand or a dancer, starts with understanding gesture. Don't worry about perfect anatomy at first; focus on the line of action and the overall flow. I often do quick 30-second sketches to warm up and get a feel for the pose's momentum. It’s all about conveying movement and energy rather than rigid accuracy. This approach helped me overcome my initial problem of making things look 'too soft' on Day 1, pushing me towards more expressive lines. Tackling Floating & Falling Figures: These poses can be intimidating because they defy gravity! My biggest takeaway? References are your best friend. When I was looking for 'floating pose reference' or 'person falling drawing base,' I found a treasure trove of inspiration. Look for photos of athletes, dancers, or even use yourself in a mirror. Pay close attention to how limbs extend, how clothing might react, and the subtle shifts in balance that create the illusion of weightlessness or impact. Foreshortening, which I started exploring on Day 6, becomes crucial here – don't be afraid to exaggerate it a little to convey depth and make your dynamic figures pop off the page. The Role of Anatomy (Simplified): While I'm still deep in my online anatomy videos, I've realized even a basic understanding helps immensely with figure drawing poses. Knowing where major muscle groups attach gives your dynamic figures more believability and structure. Think of it less as memorizing every bone and more about understanding the 'landmarks' that define form. This foundation helped me move past my 'softness' problem on Day 1 and gave me the confidence to explore more complex body drawing poses. Tips for Using References and Tools: When searching for 'floating pose reference' or 'dynamic body drawing poses,' look for a variety. Don't just stick to one angle. Tools like online pose databases, Pinterest boards, or even 3D model apps can give you endless possibilities. Remember the 'rake brush' I used for cross-hatching on Day 5? Different tools and techniques can help you achieve different textures and effects, adding life and depth to your dynamic figures. Experiment with different lines – thick for weight, thin for subtle detail, and cross-hatching for form, as I did on Day 3. Consistency and Mindset: The 'Draw Something Every Day' mantra from FIGUREVEMBER! is powerful. Even 10-15 minutes of focused practice can make a huge difference. Don't get discouraged if a drawing doesn't turn out perfectly; every line is a learning experience. On Day 3, I really liked my drawing, but on Day 5, I felt it was 'too polished' – it's all part of finding your style and pushing your boundaries. Keep experimenting, keep sketching, and enjoy the process of seeing your skills grow, especially when tackling challenging subjects like a 'person floating drawing'.

I struggle so much with drawing bodies. I can draw faces pretty well but only if I have a reference picture. Bodies are just impossible for me 🤧

I was doing this for like 30min for 30days and I found that it really helps. This was a while ago so I'm a little rusty now 🥲
