🚗 How Americans Really Commute 🇺🇸

America’s commute is overwhelmingly car-driven, but the details are wild once you zoom in:

• Drive Alone (76.3%)

Nearly 4 out of 5 Americans drive solo to work every day. That’s over 115 million workers behind the wheel alone.

• Carpooling adds another 8.7% (≈ 13 million people).

• Public Transit (5%)

Nationwide it’s tiny, but in dense metros it’s king:

• New York City: 🚇 55.7% of workers use transit — the highest in the US.

• Washington DC: 33%.

• Boston: 32%.

• San Francisco Bay Area: 17%.

Outside those hubs, most counties don’t even register red on the map.

• Walking (2.6%) 🚶‍♀️

• Alaska is the true outlier: many rural areas have no choice but to walk.

• College towns (Ithaca NY, Cambridge MA, Ann Arbor MI) have walking rates above 15%.

• Highest in Manhattan (Uber/Lyft dominance).

• Boulder CO and Portland OR push this up with bikes and scooters.

📊 Regional Contrast:

• The South & Midwest are almost pure car territory — over 85% solo drivers in many counties.

• Northeast corridor (NY–Boston–DC) is the only part of the US where transit truly rivals the car.

• West Coast sits in between: Los Angeles is car-dominated (over 83% drive) but has growing transit + rideshare bubbles.
