One challenge many parents face with their newborns is managing trapped gas, which can cause discomfort and fussiness. From personal experience, I found that the key to reducing gas lies largely in how feeds and burping sessions are handled. If you’re bottle-feeding, an effective tip is to pause during a feed to allow your baby to burp before continuing. For example, if you plan to feed about 120 ml, give half first, then pause to burp your baby. This helps release any swallowed air early, preventing it from building up in their tummy. After burping, you can continue feeding the rest of the bottle. Also, it’s important to watch that your baby doesn’t suck on an empty bottle, as this can introduce more air into their stomach, worsening gas issues. Keeping an eye on the bottle and gently burping your baby in different positions can make a big difference. Switching positions can help move trapped gas around and make burping easier. Burping in more than one position, such as holding your baby upright against your chest and then over your shoulder, can help alleviate gas more effectively. From what I’ve seen, babies respond well to gentle pats and rubs on their back during these burping moments. Remember, every baby is unique, so it might take some experimenting to find what works best for your little one. Being patient and consistent with feeding and burping routines helps minimize colic and discomfort, making feed times more pleasant for both you and your newborn.
