... Read moreVisiting a newborn can be a joyful experience, but it comes with responsibilities. Respecting the family’s boundaries is key to creating a supportive atmosphere. Start by being quiet to avoid startling the baby. Always wash your hands before holding the newborn, as hygiene is crucial. Aim for short visits to prevent overwhelming the baby and the parents. Always seek permission before holding or feeding the baby and handle the infant gently, supporting their head and neck carefully. Respect the parents’ rules, which may vary from family to family, and offer help when possible, whether that’s cooking meals, running errands, or helping with chores to ease their burden. On the flip side, there are definite avoidances during your visit. If you're feeling sick or have been around illness, it's best to stay away. Avoid touching the baby’s face to prevent germ transmission, and make sure not to overstay your welcome, as the parents may feel overwhelmed. Don’t offer unsolicited advice unless asked, nor bring extra guests without prior consent from the parents. Most importantly, do not smoke or vape around the baby. And always seek the parents' consent before snapping photos or sharing them on social media, as privacy is essential for new parents adjusting to their roles.

Saving this! When I have another kid I’m going to be very blunt & clear with my boundaries. They weren’t respected when I was kind and subtle.
