As a commuter student, here are some of my favorite items for my car to make the commute smoother and just some items that make sense to have:
⭐️ Car Phone Holder: I don’t understand how I didn’t have one of these before, but it’s so much safer than just throwing it on the passenger seat and then trying to look at directions or change the music. 🎶
⭐️Car Fresheners: Super Cheap and so helpful! Your car will start to smell really odd if you don’t have these. Fast food, gym odors, and everything in between will start to find a home in your car if not! I recommend the little trees or these glass hippie looking things
⭐️Car Emergency Kit : You need this!! If you have an emergency, see an emergency you can lend a hand and seriously keep someone stable until EMS arrives. Super adorable and may even prevent an accident, if you know what I mean. When you buy these things, you usually find you don’t need them.
... Read moreOkay, fellow commuter students, since we've already covered some non-negotiables like a solid car phone holder for navigation and those essential car fresheners to combat all sorts of 'mystery smells' (we all know them!), let's dive deeper into what else can make our daily drives to campus not just bearable, but genuinely comfortable and efficient. As someone who spends a good chunk of my week in my car, I’ve refined my list of commuter student essentials.
First up: Snack & Hydration Station! Seriously, don't underestimate the power of having quick, healthy snacks and a refillable water bottle readily available. Between classes, work, and studying, hunger can strike at the worst times, leading to expensive drive-thru runs. I always keep a small cooler bag with things like granola bars, fruit, nuts, and a couple of sandwiches. And a large, insulated water bottle is a lifesaver – staying hydrated keeps your brain sharp for lectures!
Next, let's talk Tech Power-Ups. Beyond just your phone, think about a multi-port car charger, perhaps even one with a USB-C for faster charging. What about a portable power bank? Sometimes you're on campus for hours, and your car might be your only reliable charging hub. And speaking of tech, if you frequently use your laptop or tablet for studying in between classes, consider a car inverter – it lets you plug in standard wall chargers! This has been a total game-changer for me on long study days.
Being prepared goes beyond just a basic car emergency kit (though that's paramount, as we discussed!). I also recommend having a Weather-Ready Kit. An umbrella, a spare jacket, and even a small blanket can be incredibly useful. You never know when a sudden downpour hits, or if you end up waiting for someone in a cold car. Having these simple items can turn a bad situation into a minor inconvenience.
Finally, Organization & Cleaning. Our cars often become a second locker, a mobile office, and a dining hall all in one. To combat the chaos, invest in a small trash can or a designated trash bag. Keep some wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and a microfiber cloth in your glove compartment. A trunk organizer can also be a lifesaver for keeping textbooks, gym gear, and groceries from rolling around. I once had a whole bag of apples spill across my trunk – never again! Keeping your space tidy really helps reduce stress, making your 'commuter student essentials' list complete for a truly smooth ride.
As a former commuter student, I wish I’d had this list back then! The car phone holder is a game-changer – so much safer than messing with your phone while driving.
