... Read moreFrom personal experience learning Korean and living in Korea, I’ve noticed many English words are borrowed and given new meanings that can be quite surprising for English speakers. For example, the word "glamour" in Korean often refers to a curvy body type, emphasizing physical attributes like big boobs and a big butt, which differs from the original English meaning that focuses more on charm or allure. Another interesting term is "black box" (블랙박스), which Koreans use to mean a 'dash cam' installed in cars. While in English, a black box usually refers to an airplane’s flight recorder, in Korean, the term was adapted to the small recording devices attached to vehicles. This can cause confusion when foreigners hear "check the black box inside the car." It’s always fascinating how words evolve differently across cultures! Lastly, the word "some" (썸) reflects a unique social concept for relationships in Korea. Instead of directly dating, "some" describes the stage of getting to know someone romantically but not officially a couple yet. I’ve had friends telling me they’re "riding some" (썸 타다), which is a cute and modern way to express this early romantic interest phase – something that doesn’t quite translate into English. These examples show how language is dynamic and influenced by culture, making learning Korean both challenging and fun. When you learn these adapted English words, it helps you better understand conversations and navigate social situations in Korea. It also highlights the creative ways Koreans have made English their own, reflecting local customs and lifestyles.
