Heart radical

5/25 Edited to

... Read moreWhen studying Chinese characters, I’ve found that understanding radicals, especially the heart radical (心), opens a new layer of appreciation for the language’s deep cultural roots. What’s fascinating is how ancient Chinese people not only recognized the heart’s physical structure, with its left and right chambers, but also symbolically linked it to human emotions and thoughts. This anatomical insight, gained through early dissections, is cleverly reflected in the evolution of the oracle bone script through to modern characters. In my experience learning Mandarin, seeing characters with the heart radical like 想 (think), 情 (emotion), and 爱 (love) reveals just how much Chinese writing intertwines with human psychology. Unlike Western alphabets, where words are mostly phonetic, Chinese characters embed meaning through components, showing emotion or mental states directly through the heart radical’s placement—whether at the bottom or the left side of a character. I also appreciate how the heart radical’s form has simplified over time to fit balanced square shapes, making writing faster while maintaining symbolic meaning. Many emotion-related words consistently use the heart radical as an essential part of their structure, which is a powerful reminder of how integral feelings are considered in Chinese culture. For learners and enthusiasts alike, recognizing this radical helps in vocabulary recall and adds emotional depth to language study. If you’re interested in character etymology, I suggest paying attention to the radicals and pondering what ancient Chinese people believed about the connection between body and mind. It’s like reading history and philosophy alongside language—a truly enriching experience. Plus, it makes recognizing and writing characters with heart components much easier and more meaningful.

🌱 Radical Acceptance 🌱
Some days are heavy, and our minds want to fight reality. Radical acceptance doesn’t mean you approve of the pain, it means you stop exhausting yourself trying to change what’s out of your control. 💛 Instead of resisting, remind yourself: ☀️ I can accept things as they are. 🌪️ This is difficul

A handout titled "Radical Acceptance" from DBT Skills Training, outlining what radical acceptance is, what needs to be accepted, and why reality should be accepted. It details stopping the fight against reality and letting go of bitterness.
Radical Acceptance 🌸
My therapist gave me this paper on radical acceptance today… For someone that struggles with perfectionism, it seems a strange concept. If I practice radical acceptance, what will become of me? Don’t I have to bully/ hate myself into changing attributes & habits about myself that I don’t like
