They Didn't Get It
Acts 1:3-6 NASB
To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God. [4] Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; [5] for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” [6] So, when they had come together, they began asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time that You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
Even moments before Jesus ascended back into Heaven to await the time appointed for his second coming, the disciples still didn't understand the gospel and the purpose of Jesus' time on Earth. He would later reveal the truth to a new apostle who had not been among the twelve, the Apostle Paul, who would understand and take the good news of what Jesus had done for us at the cross to the gentiles.
Reflecting on Acts 1:3-6, I find it fascinating how even Jesus' closest followers did not fully comprehend His mission or the significance of His resurrection. The disciples’ question about the restoration of Israel’s kingdom shows their limited understanding of God’s broader plan. I’ve often thought about their confusion, and it reminds me how important it is to remain patient in spiritual growth and understanding. When Jesus told them to wait in Jerusalem for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, it marked a pivotal moment in biblical history—signifying that the gospel was not only for Israel but for all people. This promise highlights the transition from an earthly kingdom focused on a nation to a spiritual kingdom encompassing everyone through grace. In my personal journey, I’ve linked this scriptural episode to the Apostle Paul’s role. Paul, although not one of the original twelve, became essential in spreading the gospel to the gentiles, illustrating how God’s revelations often come in unexpected ways to broaden our perspectives. This passage encourages believers today to embrace the mysteries of faith, understand the importance of the Holy Spirit’s work, and appreciate the unfolding nature of Jesus’ kingdom. It reminds me that spiritual enlightenment often comes gradually, and that faith involves trust even when we don’t have complete understanding yet. Incorporating these reflections into daily life has helped me deepen my appreciation for grace and the expansive nature of the gospel message beyond my initial expectations.
